What patients actually use a portal for
Most practices have watched a patient portal go unused: the login patients forget, tiles that lead nowhere, and a messaging inbox nobody has time to staff. Adoption follows a small number of concrete tasks — checking when the next appointment is, seeing what is owed, paying it, and completing forms before a first visit.
MegAligna’s portal covers those tasks and leaves out the rest. Messaging is here too, but only because the staff side that answers it is — an inbox nobody is responsible for is worse than no inbox. What is genuinely absent is named below as not included rather than shown as an inactive tile.
What the patient portal includes
- Included
Appointments at a glance
Upcoming sessions with time, provider and location — the single most common reason a patient or guardian calls the front desk.
- Included
Balances and card payment
The current balance, itemized, payable by card through the same hosted checkout the practice uses everywhere else. Card details never touch our systems.
- Included
Intake and documents
Intake forms, consents to sign, and documents the practice shares — superbills and receipts included — in one place instead of an email thread.
- Included
Messaging with the practice
A thread inside the record rather than email, which is not a HIPAA channel and lands in shared family inboxes. The staff side carries an unread count per chart, so answering is someone's defined responsibility rather than a shared mailbox nobody owns. Threads export with the chart and end when the guardian's access does.
- Not included
Full clinical records access
Not included. Notes and clinical documentation remain practice-side. Patients see the documents the practice chooses to share with them, such as superbills and receipts.
What the portal collects before a first visit is covered in intake; what it does with an appointment is covered in scheduling.

Do guardians get their own portal login?
Is the portal included in the price?
Why is messaging in the portal and not just email?
Try it end to end with test data
14 days, no card required. Use made-up patients while you evaluate — real patient information waits until a business associate agreement is in place.
